Ken-Kaide Douglas is her father. Kenashia Schia Douglas, her younger sister, is older. Douglas chose the name Ashanti in honor of Ghana's Ashanti Empire in which women were in charge and held an influence. Douglas wanted Ashanti to adopt this same model. James her grandfather was a prominent civil rights activist who collaborated with Martin Luther King Jr. during the 1960s. Ashanti's mother stumbled upon her talent after listening to her singing Mary J. Blige's Reminisce. Ashanti made her screen debut as a young girl on Spike Lee's Malcolm X and Malcolm X in 1992. She starred in the film Christmas in the City and as Latasha the character Montclair from Army Wives. Her track Rock wit U was sampled by British rapper Aitch to accompany his track Baby on the 10th of March 2022.
